We congratulate Chrispas Nyombi on is promotion to Professor of International Commercial Law at the University of Derby.

Before joining Derby, Chrispas was a Reader in International Commercial Law, Director of Research and Co-REF Lead (UoA18 - Law) at Canterbury Christ Church University. He has taught at several universities, including visiting professorships at Makerere University, Uganda (2018-) and the University of Juba, South Sudan (2022-).

I am a member of the The World Bank’s International Centre for the Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) Panels of Arbitrators (designated 2023-2029) following nomination by the Government of Uganda and a Member of Uganda’s delegation to the East African Community (EAC) that negotiated the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat Investment Protocol. I am also an External REF Reviewer for De Montfort University.

Chrispas Nyombi's publications include books, book chapters and peer-reviewed journal papers in both generalist legal journals and specialist investment law journals (see examples below) and edited collections, including on capacity building in African arbitration (in Rethinking the Role of African National Courts in Arbitration; Kluwer Law International, 2018) and investment law reform (Rebalancing International Investment Agreements in Favour of Host States; Wildy Simmonds & Hill Publishing, 2018).

We congratulate Dr Pamela Ugwudike on her promotion to Professor of Criminology at the University of Southampton.

Pamela is a Fellow of The Alan Turing Institute and she has international expertise in AI Ethics Governance, with a focus on the data-driven algorithms deployed by justice systems.

She is also a co-Editor-in-Chief of Criminology and Criminal Justice Journal (the flagship Journal of the British Society of Criminology) and she currently sits on the Editorial Board of the following Journals: The British Journal of Criminology; Policing and Society: An International Journal of Research and Policy; and the European Journal of Probation. She is also a member of the advisory group for Ada Lovelace Institute's legal review of the governance of biometric data in the UK; the Howard League for Penal Reform’s Research Advisory Group; The Youth Justice Board’s Academic Liaison Network; and an alumna of the Welsh Crucible for Future Research Leaders.

Professor Ugwudike is currently the Principal Investigator of the multidisciplinary ESRC project (ProTechThem2.0) which is exploring AI ethics, with a focus on ‘sharenting’ on social media sites, potential harms, and how best to develop AI-driven remedial strategies (2021-2024). She has also led additional multidisciplinary projects on: the ethics of predictive policing algorithms (funded by the Alan Turing Institute 2019-2021); the nexus of online epistemic domination and digital exclusion (funded by the Web Science Institute 2019-2020); the digitisation of technologies for evaluating criminal justice practice (funded by Cherish Digital Economy/EPSRC 2016-2017); and the digitisation of an evaluation package for assessing youth justice practice (funded by the ESRC IAA 2018-19).

Congratulation to Professor Collins G. Ntim for receiving an Honorary Award during the Investiture of the 18th Institute of Directors-Ghana Special Awards & Dinner ceremony.

Collins is a Professor of Accounting at University of Southampton Business School, University of Southampton. He is a qualified Chartered Accountant (CPA) and an enthusiastic Accounting academic with over 20 years of national and international teaching, research, leadership and management experience in higher education.

His research focuses on how Accounting, Finance and Governance (AFG) can drive Development and Sustainability around the world, especially the developing world (e.g., China, Sub Sahara Africa, and Middle East and North Africa), and in the process, he has published over 100 outputs, in which more than 70% have appeared in the top FT 50, ABS 4*/3*, and ABDC A*/A Journals around AFG topics that have been cited widely by academics and the popular global media, as well as attracted competitive external and internal research funds of over £0.6m.

Professor Ntim has also previously held different academic roles at Aberystwyth University, University of Glasgow and The University of Huddersfield. He was previously the Deputy Head of School (Research & Enterprise) within the Business School at the University of Southampton.

He serves as founding editor, editor, guest editor, associate editor and editorial board member of a number of top international academic journals (e.g., Accounting Forum, Accounting, Auditing and Accountability Journal; Accounting Forum; Business & Society; Corporate Governance: An International Review; Journal of Accounting Literature, Journal of International Accounting, Auditing and Taxation, and The International Journal of Accounting).

We congratulate Dr Gillian Stokes on her appointme

We congratulate Dr Gillian Stokes on her appointment as Associate Professor of Inclusive Social Research at the UCL Social Research Institute, University College London (UCL).

Prior to pursuing a career in academia, Dr Stokes had extensive experience in the commercial world, working in media and television. She now conducts health focused systematic reviews, with topics ranging from impact of medical conditions on various demographic groups to health benefits of improved domestic services. Her PhD research focused on children's participation in medicines research and development.

Alongside her academic career, Gillian Stokes is a qualified herbal practitioner and medical ethnobotanist, with qualifications in environmental, medical and social anthropology. She is a trained professional coach, with experience in coaching both staff and students, as well as a mentor for young people particularly to support African-Caribbean young people pursue careers in STEM.

Gillian is also a published poet who writes creatively to explore issues of being Black and British. Her poetry focuses on sociological issues, particularly experiences of African and Caribbean women, and the impact of forced adoption on young lives and minds. She supports and encourages Black writers both within UCL and in the wider academic and creative communities.

Dr Gillian Stokes is also one of the Society of Black Academics (SBA)'s Advisory Board Members, where she regularly provides supports on a range of SBA's activities.

The Merky Foundation, the UK charity founded by th

The Merky Foundation, the UK charity founded by the award winning British musician, @stormzy will continue to fund a further two students per year.

Five years since the launch of the Stormzy Scholarship programme at the @cambridgeuniversity , HSBC UK has pledged a further £2m in support of 30 new Stormzy Scholarships over the next three years (2024-26).

Since launching in 2018, the scholarships have helped alleviate the financial worries and transform the university experience of 32 students from less advantaged socio-economic backgrounds. It’s anticipated that a total of 81 students will have received a Stormzy Scholarship by 2026.

The Stormzy Scholarships are credited with helping Cambridge to attract more applications from a traditionally under-represented group.

The number of UK Black students admitted to undergraduate courses has more than doubled in the past five years, rising from 61 students in 2018 to 141 students in 2022.

We congratulate Dr Folashade Adeyemo on her appointment as Senior Lecturer in Law at the School of Law and Social Justice, University of Liverpool .

Folashade is a Barrister and the Co-Founder of the Global South Dialogue on Economic Crime. Prior to her appointment at University of Liverpool, she was a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in Law at the School of Law University of Reading, University of Reading, where she also served as Co-Director for Recruitment and Admissions.

With specific interests in whistle-blower protection and financial and economic crime, her work has published extensively in the field of Banking and Financial Regulation. Her research touches on these issues predominately from the global south perspective, focusing particularly on countries such as Nigeria, Kenya and South Africa. Her most recent journal article was published in the Journal of Business Law, where she considers whether whistle-blowers are adequately protected under the Public Interest Disclosures Act 1998. Fola’s recent book, titled Banking Regulation in Africa: The Case of Nigeria and Other Emerging Economies was published by Routledge in 2021. The books’ core jurisdiction focus is Nigeria; however, it also provides a holistic overview of the South African and Kenyan banking regulatory environments.

Folashade Adeyemo currently teaches across Commercial Law subjects such as Banking and Company Law and she served as the Co-Editor of the Bank Insolvency in Developing Economies, edited collection, which was published in 2022.

Kenneth is a leading scholar on sustainable business and finance in the global south. His research interest currently focuses on financial market reforms and governance, as well as on sector-level policies for sustainability and sustainability strategy in organisations. He has an expert level knowledge of developing and emerging economies. His research has a very strong interface between business and society, particularly national governments in Africa, where he has an extensive network. Since 2015, he has significantly contributed to developing the intellectual foundations of Africapitalism – an economic philosophy for the development of Africa – and championed its mainstreaming in the global academia.

Besides teaching and researching, Kenneth works closely with businesses and governments in Africa, Europe, and Asia. He leads executive capacity building engagements and consultancy projects in the broad areas of sustainable finance, sustainability strategy, leadership, ethics, and governance for multinational corporations and institutions. Between 2016 and 2017, he was a Scholar in Residence at the National Pension Commission, Nigeria.

He is a Professor of Sustainable Finance and Governance at the School of Transnational Governance, European University Institute. He is also a Visiting Professor of Leadership and Financial Markets in Africa at the The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and an Honorary Professor of Business in Africa at the Graduate School of Business, University of Cape Town, South Africa.

Sarah is an experienced and highly sought after Research Excellence Framework (REF) impact consultant with over 12 years’ experience of successfully steering 4/3 star impact case studies through REF 2014 and REF 2021.

She achieved 70% 4 star Impact case studies (30 % 3 star) for all impact case studies (ICS) and she closely worked with in REF 2021 with contributions including:
- gathering effective and compelling impact evidence (both quantitative and qualitative) for each Impact case study
- supporting impact pathways for research via brokering and supporting the development of effective partnerships and also facilitating stakeholder events which provided a focus for effectively evidencing impact within the research cycle
-providing high end writing and editorial skills in order to create outstanding impact narratives for each Impact case study worked on within REF 2021.

Her recent work includes:
- Chief REF impact academic impact consultant for Dreamachine an innovative, ambitious and outstanding STEAM project which fuses immersive arts with academic research in neuroscience and philosophy which has create done of the largest participative research projects ever commissioned
- Developing trilingual educational resources for Bournemouth University business school to support the development the entrepreneurial skills of disadvantaged young people who are excluded (or at risk) of school exclusion
- Also recently worked with the Black Music Research unit at the University of Westminster collecting impact evidence to support their pioneering research which charts the impact of Jamaican music on UK culture.

Sarah combines her academic consultancy work with a strong commitment to black history activism and anti-racist practise via her community interest company Plenty Productions CIC.

Congratulations to NHS Trust Chairman, Professor David Sallah who has been awarded an honorary doctorate for his contribution in the field of mental health and his work in promoting racial equality in the healthcare system.

With over 30 years of experience in health and social care, Professor Sallah has held numerous influential positions in the NHS, private sector, and academia. He has made contributions to the field of mental health, both at a national, government and international level.

From 2001 to 2007, Professor Sallah served as the national director responsible for the Department of Health programme for delivering race equality in mental healthcare. During this time, he played a pivotal role in shaping the policies and strategies that aimed to eliminate racial disparities in mental healthcare services.

Professor Sallah currently serves as chairman of the Board of Directors and Council of Governors of Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and continues to contribute to the development and improvement of health services within the integrated health and care system of NHS Birmingham and Solihull.

Professor David Sallah holds a masters degree in management and a PhD from Aston University. Throughout his career he has been recognised as an internationally renowned researcher, leader and health service developer and has held senior positions within the NHS, UK Government, Higher Education and the Private Sector.

We are extremely delighted to announce that Professor David Mba, FREng PFHEA has been appointed as the new Vice-Chancellor of Birmingham City University. Professor Mba is the 2nd Black Vice-Chancellor of a UK University following the appointment of Professor Charles Egbu by Leeds Trinity University in 2020.

David Mba will join the University in October and has pledged to put the student experience at the centre of ambitious plans for 2030 and beyond.

Joining Birmingham City University from the University of the Arts London (UAL), where he is Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research, Knowledge Exchange and Enterprise, Professor Mba will replace Professor Philip Plowden, who will retire after six years at the helm.

He was also the Pro-Vice Chancellor for Research and Enterprise and Pro Vice Chancellor and Dean, Faculty of Computing, Engineering and Media at De Montfort University. Prior to that, he was the Dean of the School of Engineering at London South Bank University and Associate Dean for the Faculty of Aerospace and Engineering at Cranfield University.

“I am incredibly excited by the opportunity to take on the leadership of BCU at a pivotal moment for the University, as we begin work to define – and then deliver – our significant ambitions for the next decade,” said Professor Mba.

Anita Bhalla OBE, Chair of the Board of Governors at BCU, said: “There is a great deal to do to ensure we achieve BCU’s fullest potential and David takes on a university that achieved a huge amount under the leadership of Professor Philip Plowden.

“My priority will be to ensure that everything we do focuses on unleashing the potential of our students, ensuring a consistent focus on their experience, alongside recognising, celebrating and further developing the talent of our staff. By getting that right, we will also meet the needs of the regional and national economy, something that BCU – as a powerful civic University – is uniquely placed to deliver.”

We congratulate Dr Foluke Adebisi on her appointment as Professor of Law at the University of Bristol School of Law, University of Bristol. This Professorial appointment makes Dr Adebisi the 61st Black Female Professor in the UK.

Professor Adebisi’s scholarship focuses on Decolonial Thought in Legal Education and its intersection with a history of changing ideas of the ‘‘human’’. She holds an LL.M with Distinction from Lancaster University in International Human Rights and Humanitarian Law. She also completed her Ph.D. in the same institution.

Before joining University of Bristol Law School in September 2013, she had a background is in Legal Practice and NGO work. She is the founder and director of Forever Africa Conference and Events - FACE. Professor Foluke has published widely about Law, Africa, Pedagogy and life in general.

Norin is an economist by background with professional experience both in the public and private sectors. Following an early career in banking and government as a Senior Economist, Norin has undertaken consulting and research projects for industry and different governments, working alongside EY, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (Japan), Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) (London) and The Scottish Government.

She has published in highly rated journals such as Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, Regional Studies , Small Business Economics: An Entrepreneurship Journal and International Journal of Management Reviews. In addition, she has edited two books on Entrepreneurship and Research Methods.

Professor Arshed has recently been awarded a The Leverhulme Trust Fellowship to work on “Cultivating entrepreneurship for women leaving the criminal justice system”. She has been successful in attracting grant income from various funding bodies which include the Society for the Advancement of Management Studies, The British Academy, Carnegie, Innovation Caucus (UKRI), and ESRC: Economic and Social Research Council, as well as funding awards from The Scottish Government and The Scottish Parliament.

He is currently an Associate Editor for Human Relations (journal), an international peer reviewed journal ranked among the Financial Times Top 50 journals list (FT 50), 4 in the CABS Academic Journal Guide (ABS List), and A* in the Australian Business Deans Council Journal Quality List (ABDC List). He serves on several Editorial Boards such as Human Resource Management Journal and as a Guest Editor for Special Issues at various journals such as Applied Psychology: An International Review.

Chidiebere has received a number of academic awards such as the Academy of Management HCM Division's Outstanding Paper based on a dissertation.
Chidi collaborates with government institutions and policymakers on a national and international level, including the Federal Ministry of Justice (Nigeria), Policy Connect (UK), and the Economist Intelligence Unit (UK). He is committed to securing research grant funding, having been involved in many successful bids totalling more than £7.5 million.
